If you don't vaccinate your horse against Influenza, then he will be more at risk of contracting this highly contagious disease.
This would be strangles, an infection caused by Streptococcus equi equi. The bacteria is highly contagious and can infect an entire stable within several days of the first animal becoming ill. The bacteria can infect the lymph nodes of the body (called bastard strangles and usually difficult to treat) or it can localized in the gutteral pouch (a diverticulum off the airway that sits in the throatlatch area). The disease is called strangles because the bacteria causes swelling of the gutteral pouches which can cut off the trachea and literally strangle the horse to death.
Equine Infectious Anemia is a contagious disease of horses that has, since the 1800's, resulted in outbreaks which killed large numbers of horses in many countries. There is no vaccination, so testing and either quarantine or euthanasia of infected horses is the current means of disease control. Horses with EIA can suffer from acute or chronic disease or even be inapparent carriers. The disease affects the horse's immune system and is caused by a virus related to HIV.
: Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) is a contagious viral disease of horses that can cause respiratory disease, abortion and occasionally neurologic disease. : : : For more details, see the link attached on the left of this column
Johne's disease (paratuberculosis) in cattle most often in the 2-6 year old range. It also affects other ruminant animals and occasionally horses, humans, rabbits etc. It is listed as contagious.
The type of vaccines that are compulsory when entering a horse in competition may vary from event to event so it's advisable to check the requirements with the organizers of each specific event. I have never heard of horse events requiring vaccines to be given to horses entered in them. The only related item that most competitions require is a current (within the last year) negative coggins test. A coggins test checks for the presence of Equine Infectious Anemia which is a highly contagious disease in horses. A coggins test is not a vaccine, only a test for the disease. There is no cure for the disease and horses that test positive for EIA must be euthanized or kept quarantined from other horses for the rest of their lives.
They needed younger horses
No, horses do not contract parvo.
Horses do get Bursitis, more often called Tendinitis. But it is not in any way contagious.
It could be to see if they will come into heat or are pregnant. That, or, if they are positive for any contagious disease they might have or are carriers for that can be transferred to other horses. Answer 2: It should be noted that it's not just mares that are put into a two week quarantine. Two weeks is the standard minimum for any horse in quarantine.
