A hermaphrodite is an animal that has both male and female sexual characteristics, or, it can be defined as someone who was born with ambiguous sexual organs so that identification as male or female is difficult or impossible. An example might be someone born with a vagina but also a penis - that developed from an enlarged clitoris. Alternately it could be someone born with no vagina, and hence possibly male, but whose penis is larger than a moderate sized clitoris. Often hermaphrodites undergo DNA analysis to determine sex, and surgery carried out appropriately to correct the condition. Very occasionally hermaphrodites continue to live as such. despite the obvious sexual problems they lead otherwise absolutely normal lives. Hermaphrodism is quite common in some creatures in nature. The most common examples are the earthworm, which has both male and female characteristics, and snails - each of which can both produce sperm cells ( like a male) and lay eggs (like a female).
