Italics are shown by slanting the standard type.

The following is italicized: The quick red fox jumped over the lazy brown dog.

Sometimes it depends on what the writer is trying to express. For example, in "The House On Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros, there is a line in the book in which a a person refers Esperanza's (the main character) house as that. This gives us the sense that Esperanza's house is really ugly or strange. Basically, Italics can be used to emphasize something.

Italic print is a form of print that is slanted to the right (or, from left to right). Its slant is substantially more pronounced than that of standard vertical or a standard, slightly slanted print.
