The treaty of Versailles was very harsh and this created many problems. Germany had to pay 30,000 million US dollars to France, Britain and USA to pay for the damage. However, the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles also meant that Germany couldn't earn the money. This was because the Treaty restricted their boats for trade and took away a lot of land needed for farming, mining and factories. Also, all of Germany's colonies were taken away by the League of Nations. This further restricted Germany's ability to pay the reparations (penalties).

This caused massive inflation. So much so that money was printed in million dollar notes. This was very bad for the economy of Germany and their money was worth almost nothing.

Some people even suggest that this treaty caused World War 2. This is because Germans were angry at the penalties they were made to pay and their pride was significantly hurt by the "War Guilt Clause" which states that they have to accept the blame for starting WW1. Therefore when Hitler comes along and says that Germany can be on top of the world again, and get revenge on Britain and France who made the treaty, they accept. Starting WW2.
