A word that substitutes for a noun is a pronoun, which must match the noun in person, number, gender. This is called pronoun-antecedent agreement.

Attributing your own feelings or faults to another person or group is called projection. It involves unconsciously assigning to others traits, motives, or desires that actually belong to oneself.
One possible substitute for "their" is "his" or "her" depending on the gender of the person/people being referred to. Another substitute can be "its" when referring to a non-human object or entity.
