The opening can fuse closed. Your pediatrician can prescribe topical estrogen cream to apply that will painlessly cause it to re-open. This apparently is never seen in a newborn because the baby still carries some of the estrogen from her mother and also it will not occur after puberty (until menopause when it becomes possible again) Anytime between those stages and it is possible. You have to be very thorough in cleaning the area during diaper changes because the skin is sticky and if it isn't cleaned well it can fuse together. Again, go see your pediatrician.
