There are two different kinds of power take offs (PTOs), those used on trucks and those on farm tractors. Truck power take offs are gearboxes which may be attached to the main transmission in order to drive a winch, pump, air compressor, generator, or some other device independent of the vehicle's drive wheels. The PTO is driven by shifting its drive gear to engage the cluster gear inside the transmission. The PTO shifter might be as simple as a push-pull knob on the instrument panel, or it may be a lever on the floor. Some truck transmissions have a PTO opening on both sides of the transmission, providing the option to mount the power take off on either side of the transmission, and so that two PTOs can be used independently or together as needed. A power take off mounts to a small rectangular opening with six bolts. The PTO mounting pad is a standard SAE design, regardless of the make or model of the truck. Some truck automatic transmissions, such as the Allison, provide a PTO mounting pad. A power take off may be as simple as a single-speed gearbox -- either engaged or in neutral, or it may have forward, neutral and reverse, depending on the need. Most truck power take offs are arranged so that the vehicle's clutch disengages not only the main transmission's output shaft to the drive wheels, but also disengages the PTO. Farm tractors are commonly equipped with a power take off, but on a farm tractor, the PTO is built-in to the tractor's main transmission and extends behind the final drive housing just above the drawbar. Most modern farm tractors use a "live" power take off, which means that it is driven directly from the engine, even when the tractor's main clutch is disengaged. The PTO shaft is a splined 1-3/8" standard size and may operated at a standard speed of 550 revolutions per minute (rpm) when the engine is operating at its governed speed. Some PTOs have more than one speed. The PTO may power all sorts of equipment, such as a sickle-bar mower, a hay baler, small combine, sprayer, or other equipment. Alternatiors are available to be PTO driven and may generate up to 10,000 watts of electrical power for emergency situations.
