The Wilmot Proviso (1846) prohibited slavery on any land acquired from Mexico.

The Compromise of 1850 centered on the issue of slavery in the newly acquired territories from the Mexican-American War, including California and New Mexico. It aimed to address the balance between free and slave states by allowing popular sovereignty in some western territories.
The Compromise of 1850 said slavery should be forbidden in all lands taken from Mexico. The Compromise allowed California to be admitted as a free state into the Union.
It was the Wilmot Proviso that said any lands acquired from Mexico would not allow slavery. It was written by David Wilmot, who served as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania.
