A railroad roadmaster

is responsible for the track and right of way. The roadmaster

supervises the railroad crews, contractors and equipment used to maintain and repair track to the railroad's and to government's safety standards. Large railroads will have a roadmaster

for each operating division of the road (which may be 100 miles of track or more) under the supervision of a senior roadmaster

or engineering department. The job requires technical knowledge of track construction, railroad operations, as well as

civil engineering and management skills.
