the best tried and true remedy to this question is by laying dry straw around the strawberry leaves/plants. Using compost rots the fruit. Straw provides a soft bedding for the fruit, mulch to cover/smother any weed growth and absorbs any unwanted moisture. If your plants are already in and surrounded by weeds i suggest you uproot them, lay black polythene down, poke a hole through where the strawberry plant will be then replant it, then lay down the straw..these fruit thrive grown on a mound covered as outlined above. To increase crop, spray flowers with sugar/water solution...one tsp per ten litres is ample...as soon as the flowers begin to open. this will attract more bees than before. Tis method also applies to all flowering fruit bearing plants. happy gardening. You don't indicate what kind of weeds you are trying to kill.
Corn gluten meal will prevent seeds from germinating so it will help prevent some weeds in the first place.
In the case of a severe weed problem you may need to remove the top few inches of soil and replace with compost. Compost should not have any weed seeds in it - which would not be the case if you used top soil.
If you are trying to kill grass the best solution is probably just to dig it out. Some weeds such as grass and bindweed can be spread if you till the ground.
I have been able to kill off weeds by mowing them down and then covering what is left with 4 inches of compost and then planting right in it. It you do this then wait awhile before planting or at least watch for weeds which could come up through the planting hole. This works even better if you cover the area with cardboard or layers of newspaper before putting down the compost.
Safe weed killers - which will also kill your strawberries or any other plants they come into contact with - contain vinegar or soaps. You can do an internet search but one name is Burn Out. You would need to cover your strawberry plants just while spraying to protect them but if the spray doesn't hit them they should be fine.
