It is named 'The Grid;.
The North/South lines are Lines of Longitude (Meridians) and can fix midday and midnight times.
The East/West lines are the Lines of Latitude can can fix you position North/South of the Equator by solar observation.
To aid positioning, a given place will be quoted as so many degrees N/S of the Equator and then so many degrees E/W of the zero meridian.
Each degree of latitude is 60 nautical miles (NOT land miles, which is about 70 miles) apart. These degrees are them sub-divided in to 'minutes'.
One minute of a degree is one nautical mile.
These minutes are then sub-divided further into 'seconds' . Like a clock/timepiece, there are sixty seconds in one minute. Similarly, each minute of a degree is divided into 60 seconds. This final measurement is so accurate that you can be positioned to within 40 yards (25 metres) on the ground.
So as an example if we use the White House, Washington D.C., the official residence of the President of the USA. its position is 38o 53' 52" N . 77o 02' 11" W.
In words 'Thirty Eight degrees, fifty three minutes, fifty two seconds North ; Seventy seven degrees two minutes eleven seconds W. '
Notice the symbols ; a little circle for degrees , a single dash for minutes and a double dash for seconds , and the N/S comes before the E/W.
You try it for say the 'Empire State Building in New York, USA, or anywhere else for that matter.
The system of lines and spaces found on a map is "grid"
Longitude and Latitude lines.

Besides helping us to locate places on maps and charts, lines of latitudes divide the earth into distinctive heat belts on basis of temperature.
Mention in two points how the grid system on a map helps us to locate places.
An atlas or map comes with an index, use it to pinpoint the place you are looking for Or you could use google maps. (Click "maps" on the google main page.) You can type a placename and drag the map to scroll.
a grid on a map is like a chart where one side should be numbers and the other side should be letters. like for the question what is located at g4? go to g and over four, and go to four and down four.
They do not. The purpose of latitude and longitude is to give everyone an unambiguous way to describe any location on Earth, in a way that anybody else will be able to locate this same spot.
map index
It is a network of lines that used to zone different areas on a map. They help locate places by separating areas
they help us locate places with the help of grid lines........................
latitude and longitude
It is like coordinates all around the earth
On a large scale map, they are the latitudes and longitudes. On more detailed maps they would be Eastings and Northings. On very detailed maps they could be just grid lines to help locate places.
Besides helping us to locate places on maps and charts, lines of latitudes divide the earth into distinctive heat belts on basis of temperature.
Lines of latitude and longitude help us locate places on maps and globes. Latitude lines run horizontally and measure the distance north or south of the equator, while longitude lines run vertically and measure the distance east or west of the prime meridian. By using these lines, we can pinpoint the exact coordinates of any location on Earth.
Latitude lines are imaginary lines that run East to West but measure North to South on the Globe. I remember latitude is fatitude. Longitude lines go North to South but measure East to West. I remember it as LONGitude.
it is used to help locate the important places
it helps u locate places it is a map of the whole world
