With out knowing if this is a Electric fuel pump or Mechanical? I will describe some symptoms.
Electric. Can be noisey! No sound from the pump when the key is turned on! The rail pressure may be reduced by either a leaking check valve or pump. Causing a hard to start situation. If you turn the key on and off a few times, listen for the pump humming sound. Usually a good place to start with all fuel problems is to replace the fuel filter. There are intank filters and external filters on the frame rail. Also as a rule of thumb..if the vehicle has over 125,000 miles...the pump may just be tired. You may even go to AUTOZONE repair guide section for your car for specifics. Electric pumps generate 65 to 100 pounds of pressure...so be careful cracking a line...gas can cause a fire quickly. Be safe always working around gasoline.
If you have a mechanical pump.....you can crack the fuel line at the carburetor and put a container under the line. have someone crank the engine and see if there is fuel coming out of the line. Most older mechanical pumps run 4 to 7 pounds of pressure, but as I said..alway be careful with gasoline. And dispose of any rag out side of your garage..where the house doesn't go up in smoke in the middle of the night. Good luck
either your fuel pressure regulator is bad or the fuel pump is weak and going
If you hear the fuel pump making noise it is either failing or being overworked due to a clogged fuel filter. Engine does not start quickly is another sign. Sometimes there is no warning and it will just fail.
Blown fuel pump fuse, defective fuel pump relay, bad fuel pump, or clogged fuel filter.
It doesn't work!
Noisy fuel pump, stalling, or engine will not start and you have no fuel pressure.
If the fuel pump becomes noisy you can rest assured it is going bad. But, the pump maybe going bad and not make any noise at all. Anytime you have a problem with fuel delivery, first thing to do is replace the fuel filter. After replacing the fuel filter a fuel pressure test will verify the condition of the pump.
by going to the fuel satation
If you hear the fuel pump run that is a good sign it is working however, a fuel pump pressure test would tell you if the pump is meeting the required pressure.
A bad fuel pump will cause the fuel not to flow into the fuel pump. Another cause can be a leak in the fuel line.
well if you have fuel and a new filter a good fuel pump relay and the wires going to the fuel pump have power and no fuel pressure you need a fuel pump
A fuel pressure test done at the fuel rail will verify the condition of the fuel pump. Before going to that much trouble check the fuse, and fuel pump relay. If either one is defective the fuel pump will not function.
how do i know the fuel pump is going bad in a 1998 ford expedition eddie bauer?
