A single-user operating system is a type of operating system (OS) that is developed and intended for use on a computer or similar machine that will only have a single user at any given time. This is the most common type of OS used on a home computer, as well as on computers in offices and other work environments. There are two general types of single-user operating system: single task and multitasking systems. Though a single-user operating system can be connected to other systems through a network, it is still truly only used by a single person and is different than a multi-user OS. A single-user operating system that is a single task system is developed for use with a computer or electronic device that will only run one application at a time. This type of OS is typically used on devices such as wireless phones and two-way messaging devices. A single task, single-user operating system can only run one program or application at a time, and so is not as useful for a computer or other device intended to run multiple programs at once.

Having only one user accessing a computer's operating system (OS) does have its advantages. The most obvious plus to this are the usual advantages with not having to share: more room and less clutter. If a computer has two different user profiles for one OS, each person's files will be taking up space on the same hard drive. This means that, for example, if you do a lot of video editing and have large video files you need to save to the drive but the other person who shares the OS with you just put his or her 10,000 song music collection on the same computer yesterday, all of a sudden you don't have enough room.

Alternately, having another person using the drive can open you up to unwanted dangers if the other person has less computer experience and bad computer use habits. For example, if you're a parent using a computer for business and your 15-year-old has a profile on it and they download malware or open an email attachment with a virus in it, all your data is on the drive that is coming under attack which may leave you to suffer the consequences of their mistake.
