A tailbar Morgan refers to a certain die used to strike coins at the mint, the die is known as the VAM-4 1890 CC. This particular die was of the reverse of the coin and was gouged making a bar form which connects the eagles feathers with the laurel below. This particular variety is highly collectible for its uniqueness and rarity.
Feathers, that are on the EAGLE that is on the reverse of all US silver dollars
On the reverse (the back) of the coin, between the "DO" in "DOLLAR" and the center of the wreath, just below the eagle's tail feathers.
It is located below the "ONE" above the eagles tail feathers if this is a "Peace " dollar.
The 1878 8TF variety has only 8 feathers, the 7 over 8 (Also called Doubled tail feathers) has 7 feathers but at the very tips you can see the other feathers sticking out from under the main 7 on top. It may be a little hard to see if the coin has heavy wear.
Assuming the coin is circulated and has no mintmark, the 1889 Morgan dollar is common. The retail values are $30.00-$44.00 depending on condition. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelery or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer. NOTE: The only Morgan dollar to have 8 tail feathers is the "First Reverse" 1878 Philadelphia issue. All others have 7.
It may not have one, but all mintmarks on Morgan dollars are on the back under the eagles tail.
The "Tail Bar' variety is only known on the 1890-CC issue Morgan dollar. It shows on the reverse as a bar connecting the lower arrow feather to the top of the wreath, likely caused by a die gouge.
A "Carson City Morgan Dollar" is simply a Morgan dollar produced at the Carson City, Nevada, mint. Such a coin can be identified by the mintmark "CC" on the reverse of the coin, beneath the tail feathers of the eagle.
This coin is valued at about 90 dollars.
It's not a Morgan dollar, the last one was made in 1921. The coin is a Peace dollar, look on the back of the coin just above the eagles tail for a small "S" and post a new question with if it has one or not, it makes a BIG difference in value.
All 1879 issues have 7 tail feathers.
For U.S. silver dollars, the mintmark is located on the reverse of the coin under the eagle. For Morgan Dollars mintmark's are under the wreath and above the letters DO in DOLLAR. Peace Dollars have mintmark's under the word "ONE" near the eagle's tail.
