A training contract (TC) is something you embark on (if you are lucky enough to get one) after you have finished your legal training which includes a law degree and the Legal Practice Course (or a law conversion course called the GDL). The TC lasts for two years and it is basically on-the-job training, where you are able to take on clients but you are supervised by other solicitors. During the TC you have to complete a Professional Skills Course. Once the TC is complete you can call yourself a solicitor (you are no longer a trainee). If you want to leave during a TC if you are unhappy for example, some firms will make you pay for the training you have already carried out, but this is usually firms that cannot afford to lose the money they have invested in you, such as high street firms rather than city firms. Trying to obtain a TC is very difficult as most law students will know. Law is one of the most competitive fields to go into, so fight hard for that all important TC!
