In the simplest terms posiible you need to know that vaccines work WITH your immune system by building up your body's ability to DEFLECT unwanted diseases from your body. The vaccines are used to build up your resistance to the known pathogens. For instance a "flu" shot consists of pathogens of the influenzas the Center for Disease Control (and the World Health Organization) predict will be in season and should be included in the "flu shot".

An example is the annual flu vaccine/flu shots. Others are the measles, mumps and rubella vaccines, to name only a limited number of examples but there are many others, including vaccines for some bacterial infections.

G'day buddy. The way a vaccination works is it is an injection of a depleted form of the disease itself, however it is not strong enough to cause you any harm, our immune system reacts to the vaccination and remembers what it is. So when the disease itself comes to play, the immune system recognizes what it is and doesn't let it in.

Injections that result in immunization are called vaccinations or vaccines. These vaccines consist of a dead or weakened version of the disease that allows your body to produce antibodies specific to that disease. If you later come into contact with that disease, your body will recognize it immediately and it won't have the chance to infect you. Today we have vaccinations for many diseases that used to be life-threatning in most of the world, and some which still are in many developing countries. Vaccines include those for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tetanus, Yellow Fever, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Typhoid, Meningitis, Rabies, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Polio, and Chicken Pox. We are lucky to live in a world where many of us have access to these life-saving vaccines and should make sure to get vaccinated if we live in or travel to places where we might be at risk.

Vaccines are administered to help make a person immune to a disease. However, it's the actual antibodies that react to the vaccine (or the contracted illness) that make a person immune.

Why give a baby a hepatitis shot?

Vaccinations are intended to prevent diseases - they are much less useful if given after exposure to the disease. It makes sense to vaccinate children before they have much chance of exposure. Remember that Hepatitis B & C are not just transmitted sexually, but can also be transmitted by blood contact such as stepping on a used needle. If we have as many people as possible who are immune to Hepatitis B, then there will be less of it in the population and therefore less chance of it being caught by the people who are not immune (such as people who do not react to the vaccine).

Is HIV the primary cause of death in people with AIDS?

Here's how it works: HIV is the name of a virus that attacks the immune system, makes it weaker. Eventually the immune system fails completely, which makes the person wide open to any and all diseases. The name for when this happens is AIDS. AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Meaning your immune system has gotten really weakened. Meaning you catch a lot of other diseases easily. Eventually one of them, or several of them working together, is what kills you.
