When opening up a computer program, internet Explorer for example, on a Microsoft Windows computer, you will notice the screen has a box around it, with a long bar going across the top of the screen. This bar includes (from left to right):

  • A program icon, such as a blue "e" with a gold ring around it (this is the symbol for internet Explorer)
  • The name of what you are looking at (WikiAnswers-'What is a computer window?')
  • The name of the program (- Internet Explorer)
  • To the far right of the screen, you wil see 3 boxes with: a minimize symbol (a small rectangle), a resize symbol (two boxes), and a red box with a close symbol (an "X").
  • The minimize box will make your screen go down to the "TaskBar" (a long bar at the bottom of the screen, which has a "Start Menu" that shows a list of your programs) which allows you to look at your desktop and open other programs. Clicking on your program on the taskbar will make your window cover the screen.
  • The resize box allows you to change the size of your window. You can make your window full screen, or drag the sides of the window to size it to your liking.
  • The close box will make you leave your program.
  • Scrollbars are bars on the side of a window with two arrows (one above and one below the bar) that allows you to look at different parts of your window. Not all windows have scrollbars.

Depending on what program you use, the window may have a more simple or more complex design then the window for Internet Explorer that is described here.
