A normal total white blood cell count is 5000-10000 (with some local laboratories having some slightly different ranges.) The total count is broken down in to lymphocytes, granulocytes, and monocytes. The granulocyte count is generally what is used to determine if a person is able to have a chemotherapy treatment.

An adult white cell blood count should be between 4-11 x10^9/ L. This is however very variable depending on what the patient has, and what lab. does the testing. (Some labs range is 3-10). A result of 3.9 or 11.1 would not necessarily be abnormal. What is more important is the actual blood cell count that is abnormal. For example, if your Lymphocytes are greater than the range 1-3 x10^9/L then you probably have a viral infection for example. The total white cell count is not as important as the individual cells that make up this count.

Blood cells include Erythrocytes, Leucocytes and Platelets.

Abnormal blood count means either increase or decrease in the count of one or more of these cells.

Leucocytes include Polymorphs, Lymphocytes, Eosinophils, Basophils, Monocytes etc. Any change in the percentage of these cells in called abnormality in differential count.

Sometimes cells in the Bone Marrow that are precursors of these cells, that normally are not seen in peripheral blood appear. This also can alter the blood count. So do some diseases of the bone marrow and lymphocytes.

What is abnormal hemoglobin?

Abnormal hemoglobin is a lab result . First it is important to know what hemoglobin is, it is the stuff that fills your red blood cells. You will have to check with your doctor about the meanings of high hemoglobin or look it up online. But low hemoglobin generally signals a problem because there is not enough to fill the red blood cells. An abnormal hemoglobing test really doesnt tell me anything, you should also look at your bilirubin which tells how fast blood cells are being destroyed and the actual red blood celll count which may be labeled RBC or TBC for total blood cell count.
