Sometime during there marriage, she bore Achelous 3 daughters named Callirrhoe, Pierene, and Castalia. Soon after that, Perimela died and Achelous fell in love with Muse Melpomene, daughter of Zeus, King of the Olympian Gods and the Titaness Mnemosyne. They had 7 daughters who were called the Sirens who actually surpass their mother and aunts in singing. They were then banished to the island Anthemoessa near ancient Italy, far away from heir aunts. Achelous traveled to Claydon to seek the hand of the mortal Deianira, the beautiful daughter of King Oeneus and Queen Althea Achelous fell in love with Deianeria, but she was already in love with someone else, Hercules, son of Zeus. When Achelous met Hercules, they fought unarmed in battle for Deianeria. When they started fighting, Achelous tried to make Hercules weary by shape shifting into various forms but Hercules stayed strong and continued to fight Achelous. When Achelous turned into a bull, Hercules wrestled him down into the ground and ripped one of his horns off. With Achelous wailing in agony, the fight ended. Hercules took the horn and filled it with food as an offering to the Gods. It was then became known as the Cornucopia or Horn of Plenty. The contest of Achelous with Heracles was represented on the throne of Amyclae and in the treasury of the Megarans at Olympia there was a statue of him made by Dontas of cedarwood and gold. On several coins of Acarnania the god is represented as a bull with the head of an old man.
