Achelous is the patron deity of "Silver Swirling." Achelous was the river god of Aetolia in central Greece. The Achelous River flowed southward from Thessaly and formed the boundary between Acarnania and Aetolia as it flowed to the Ionian Sea in the land that would be modern Greece.

Achelous, with 3000 river brothers is described as a son of Oceanus and Tethys. His uncles are the Titans and his aunts are the Titanesses. Achelous was married twice, first was Perimel who had 3 children, then was Melpomene who had 7 daughters. (They were the sirens) Achelous had 10 nieces including the harpies and had 4 nephews.

Achelous possesses the conventional attributes as the Olympian Gods including superhuman strength. He had superhuman resistance to any kind of injury, stamina, longevity and the ability to change his size and appearance. He can turn into a snake or a bull as well as assume humanoid forms merging human and animal forms. Addition to changing into a bull he can take on the form as a Minotaur.

Achelous, on earth, ruled over the river Achelous which shares the same exact name. Achelous fell in love with Perimela, daughter of the Mortal King Aeolus. I don't know why but Achelous flung Perimela off a cliff, but Aeolus convinced the sea god Neptune to rescue her for him. Sometime during there marriage, she bore Achelous 3 daughters named Callirrhoe, Pierene, and Castalia.

Soon after that, Perimela died and Achelous fell in love with Muse Melpomene, daughter of Zeus, King of the Olympian Gods and the Titaness Mnemosyne. They had 7 daughters who were called the Sirens who actually surpass their mother and aunts in singing. They were then banished to the island Anthemoessa near ancient Italy, far away from heir aunts.

Achelous traveled to Claydon to seek the hand of the mortal Deianira, the beautiful daughter of King Oeneus and Queen Althea Achelous fell in love with Deianeria, but she was already in love with someone else, Hercules, son of Zeus. When Achelous met Hercules, they fought unarmed in battle for Deianeria. When they started fighting, Achelous tried to make Hercules weary by shape shifting into various forms but Hercules stayed strong and continued to fight Achelous. When Achelous turned into a bull, Hercules wrestled him down into the ground and ripped one of his horns off. With Achelous wailing in agony, the fight ended. Hercules took the horn and filled it with food as an offering to the Gods. It was then became known as the Cornucopia or Horn of Plenty.

The contest of Achelous with Heracles was represented on the throne of Amyclae and in the treasury of the Megarans at Olympia there was a statue of him made by Dontas of cedarwood and gold. On several coins of Acarnania the god is represented as a bull with the head of an old man.

Did the sirens of Greek mythology have a mom?

Sirens were considered to be the daughters of river goddess Achelous, although this would be incorrect as they were not sea deities. Romans considered them closer to being daughters of Phorcys (God of hidden dangers of the deep), although again they were not meant to be related to the gods. Homer did not write of their origins, so little had been written of their actual origins. As there is no real definitive answer, you could either claim their parentage through either Achelous or Phorcys and not be truly "incorrect" or "correct".
