Vários edifícios de importância histórica foram tombados. Foi iniciada a implantação do metrô de superfície. Iniciada em 1984 e concluída em 1997, a canalização do Ribeirão Arrudas pôs fim ao problema das enchentes ao centro da capital. Contudo, vários problemas surgiram e alguns permaneceram. Um deles foi a degradação da Lagoa da Pampulha, um dos principais cartões-postais da cidade, que tornara-se uma lagoa praticamente morta devido à poluição de suas águas.Em 1980, aproximadamente 850.000 pessoas tomaram a então Praça Israel Pinheiro (conhecida como Praça do Papa) para receber o próprio Papa João Paulo II.
