In relation to computers - In word-processing, it's when a paragraph of text is split over two pages, causing a large chunk (the widow) to be on one page and a smaller chunk (the orphan) on the other. Word-processors usually have a menu option to allow or forbid widows and orphans. This means any paragraph that splits because of the need for a page break, is pushed onto the the next page - leaving a gap at the bottom of the previous one.
