Did monks carry pepper around with them in the medieval ages?

Yes and no. Monk's pepper refers to an herbVitex agnus-castus, also called Vitex, Chaste Tree, that monks would sprinkle on their food. The ground up seed of Vitex was considered to be an anaphrodesiac (opposite of aphrodesiac ). They believed that consuming the seed daily would reduce their libido, and make keeping their vows of chastity a little easier. Whether they passed their pepper around to folks outside their orders is unknown.

What do avocado's look like?

The original name of the avocado was the word ahuacatl from the Nahuatl language (Aztec). It means 'testicle' and this refers to the shape of the fruit. Aztecs used the fruit as an aphrodesiac. They are generally rounded bottomed, with a rounded pointy stem end, sort of teardrop shaped. Their sizes and skins differ in appearance, depending on the cultivar. Some have dark bumpy skins when ripe, and some are smooth and green. Hass avocados from California are almost black and very bumpy when ripe, and are very common in US grocery stores. The skin peels off very easily, revealing a soft green to yellowgreen flesh surrounding a large round seed, usually an inch and a half or so in diameter. The seeds sprout easily and you can grow a tree from it, but you may or may not get a similar looking fruit from a seed-started tree, as many are grafted from known cultivars. It can take 4-6 years before a seed-started tree bears fruit.

What are positive and negative things about vanilla?

Let's start with the negative, just to get it over with. Although there is not a lot of negative about this spice, Vanilla just so happens to be the second most expensive spice, (the first being saphron). The reason it is so expensive is because of the intensive labor that is put into growing the seed pods it is extracted from. There is also word that peoples suffering from a disease called Gilbert's Syndrome should not ingest vanilla. Then there is always the alcohol thing...although it is possible to get a bit intoxicated from the vanilla extract, you would have to drink an immense amount of it, and would be better off going with something that was manufactured just for drinking. That would not be vanilla. As for the good of vanilla, I could go on forever. Vanilla can be used to calm certain spicy foods, to lighten the flavor of a pungent dish. It has been said to be a calming scent for your mind and body. Some hospitals even use vanilla scented oils to calm patients. It can be used as an aphrodesiac as well. There have been studies on what scent males are most aroused by, and more often than not, vanilla is the winner. It also has many antioxidants, however it is not as rich in them as many other fruits, spices, and sources. You can also use vanilla to scent your home, your lotions, in perfumes, in drinks, as a helpful trick to make nasty liquid medicines go down easier.

Who discovered cilantro?

Cilantro (Coriandrum sativum), or coriander, is in the same family (Apiaceae) as parsley, parsnip, celery, dill, and carrots. It is native to the Mediterranean and Asia Minor (now Turkey), and it has been used since at least 5,000 BC.Ancient herbalists used the crushed seeds and leaves in poultices and salves and considered them to be an aphrodesiac. The ancient Egyptians used coriander tea to treat ailments such as urinary tract infections and headaches, and coriander seeds were found in King Tut's tomb. The word coriander comes from koris, the Greek word for bedbug, because the unripened seeds as well as the leaves are said to smell like bedbugs. (We now know that the aroma of cilantro comes from several substances, most of which are modified fragments of fat molecules called aldehydes. The same or similar aldehydes are also found in soaps, lotions, and the bug family of insects.) The early physicians, including Hippocrates, used cilantro for its medicinal properties, including as an aromatic stimulant. The ancient Israelites were also familiar with coriander. "The house of Israel called the name therof Manna: and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey." (Exodus 17:31). Coriander is also mentioned in One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of West and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age (8th century-1258 AD). In one of the stories, it was part of a mixture that supposedly helped a childless man to have children. The Romans spread cilantro to Asia, and the Chinese have used cilantro ever since. The Chinese believed it to be an aphrodisiac and to produce immortality. The Romans also took cilantro with them to Britain.Cilantro was one of the first herbs (along with dandelions) to be brought to the Americas from Europe: The Spanish conquistadors introduced it to Mexico and Peru in the 1500s, and the British introduced it to North America in 1670. It was grown in many places, including the Massachusetts Bay Colony.Today, cilantro is used for both culinary and medicinal purposes from the Southwest U.S. through Central and South America, and in India, China, and Thailand, and it is widely employed in particularly savory dishes of many cultures both in modern as well as traditional cuisines.
