Apron Sinks are a Unique Addition to Any Kitchen?

Apron sinks, or farm sinks, as they are similarly called, are making a huge comeback to the design of large kitchens. Apron sinks have been around for a long time, and at one time, were about the only kind of sink you could get in your kitchen, before the advent of the dual-bowl sink. Apron sinks are large and, although they are considered to be more in demand for people who need a big sink for big chores in their kitchens, they also make a unique design statement, bringing the old-fashioned into the contemporary world. The way an apron sink is installed in the kitchen countertop makes its design that much different from the standard kitchen sink. The apron sink is installed so that the front of the sink, or the apron part, is showing completely. Therefore, the sink sets back into a hole that is cut into the countertop with the front of the countertop completely cut away. Most apron sinks are quite heavy, so additional supports are installed below the sink under the counter space. The most common materials used to manufacture apron sinks are cast iron and fireclay; however, any material you can envision as being used to manufacture standard kitchen sinks can be found in apron sinks, including granite, stainless steel, copper, marble and other stones. You can order an apron sink in either the large single-bowl design or the dual-bowl design; however, the idea behind the apron sink is to give your kitchen a farm kitchen feel and therefore, the rectangular, deep single-bowl design comes closest to accomplishing that designing task. One way to make your apron sink even more unique is to find one that has a design either painted on the front or carved into the stone. There are many designs to choose from. A simple painting on a large white fireclay apron sink can take it from simple to simply elegant, giving your kitchen the feel of something akin to a French country cottage kitchen. The apron sink is not a new idea but a timeless idea that adds a unique flair to any kitchen.

Otherwise, you will need to measure the apron sink and mark the sink base using the measurements. If your sink width is equal to the width of the sink base, it may be as simple as measuring down the appropriate amount and cutting the top, back and sides completely away from the sink base. Your apron front stainless steel farm sink may be undermounted, flush mounted, or raised slightly above the countertop. Whichever method you choose will determine the height of your cutout for the front of the sink base. · You will need to support the bottom of your new apron front sink. Install horizontal bracing from front to back along the inside sides of the cabinet with ½" plywood on top of the bracing to create a platform for the sink to rest on. Position the bracing so that after the plywood is installed your sink will sit at the desired height. Size the plywood so that it stops short of reaching the back side of the cabinet and will clear the plumbing when installed. Cut out holes where necessary in the plywood for the drain lines to hook up to the bottom side of the sink. Slip the sink into place and then install the countertops. Use silicone sealant to seal everywhere that the farm apron sink meets the countertop. The silicone sealant used to seal the sink will hold the sink in place.

How to Select and Isntall an Apron Sink?

Apron sinks have become very popular recently when remodeling a set of older cabinets or building cabinets for a new home. Since they are informally called farmhouse sinks, they do not work well in every home setting. The main difference in an apron sink and a regular drop in sink is that it has its own front instead of being fronted by a cabinet. Due to the numerous designs available in these sinks, they can work well in some traditional and contemporary homes as well as in country style homes. The type of apron sink used should be determined by the style of the cabinets, the color and surface material of the countertops, and the overall design of the kitchen. Apron sinks come in stone, copper, stainless steel, fireclay, cast iron, and bronze. They have smooth and glossy finishes, decorative fluted and carved finishes. The decision to use an apron sink in lieu of a drop in sink must be decided before remodeling existing cabinets or building a new set of cabinets so that it can be properly installed. Some apron sinks can weigh up to three hundred pounds and need to be supported well. When building new cabinets, the measurement for the front opening in the cabinets and the countertops should be taken into consideration during construction. An apron sink is fitted into a gap in the front of the cabinets and between an opening left open in the countertop. When remodeling older cabinets, the same attention to detail applies plus the original cabinet doors will need to be changed to smaller ones. Whether cabinets are remodeled or newly built, the top of the sink should align with the countertop so that it is level across and there are no cracks on either side of the sink. Minor cracks can be sealed with silicone caulking. The cabinet below the sink must be well fortified with several 2”x 4” supports that are located just under the sink, cautiously using enough to support the total weight of the sink. A well chosen apron sink that goes well with the other decorative items in the room can be an attractive focal point in the kitchen.

How to Install an Apron Sink?

There are not many things that give a kitchen the same level of charm than an apron sink will. Rather than the regular kind of sink you may have, having an apron sink means it protrudes a little bit more outward, which means you will need to make special kinds of cuts so that it can be installed correctly.Figure out how tall the sink truly is. This means you will want to measure up to wear the counter top has met the sink. If you have a top mount apron sink, this means from the counter top to the cabinet base. Otherwise, such as an under mount sink, measure the base of the cabinet to beneath the counter top.Look for the support lip, which is where the sink rests on its supports. It can be found on the underside of the sink. Measure it and subtract it from your previous measurement; the difference is how tall your supports will need to be.Measure the depth of the cabinet inside to get the length of your board support. Get some wood and cut two squares of this measurement.Pre-drill a few holes about four inches apart from one another down the board. Attach it to the long side of the wall of your sink and repeat for the other side.Measure the front of the sink and include an eighth of an inch. This is to allow room for the apron sink to hover a little bit above the front of the cabinet rather than be placed onto it. Get a jig saw and make a hole in the front of the cabinet as per your measurements.See whether the sink fits properly or not. The weight should be fully on the supports from the side of the wall and not at the cabinet edges. Before you run your caulk on the support bar, you should make any and all of the adjustments as necessary. When you are ready to use your caulk, press the sink down firmly and put the caulk on the sink edges. This is necessary to keep water from slipping beneath the lip. Before using the sink, make sure to install your drain and faucet.
