In ancient days in India, Ashrama used to be built in a remote forest area where a Spiritual Guru and Guru Mai would live and teach their pupil in the art of living. These teachings would include secular and spiritual lessons. These Ashramas would be run on the patronage of kings or queens. In certain cases these were maintained by rich merchants.

In modern times these Ashrams are run on public charity. Ashram products are also sold to devotees who throng these Ashramas in search of peace and happiness. Lessons and courses are also undertaken by these Ashramas to better the health and happiness of participants. This way also Ashramas continue with their preaching and teachings.
