An ice compress can be anything from a plastic bag filled with ice chips to a much fancier (and more effective) poly sack filled with a gel substance that doesn't freeze at normal freezer temperatures. They're applied to the injury site, and used mostly to reduce swelling and pain in injuries, but also have a home in physical therapy and even the football locker room.
