Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano (composite volcano), which are a tall, conical volcanoes built up by many layers of hardened lava, tephra, pumice, and volcanic ash. They are reinforced by dikes that crisscross their lava flows and act like natural re-bar, making them extremely sturdy. Unlike shield volcanoes, stratovolcanoes are characterized by a steep profile and periodic, explosive eruptions.

It's located on the Philippine island of Luzon; the largest and most economically and politically important island in the Philippines and one of the three island groups in the country.

It's located in the Tri-Cabusilan Mountain range that separates the west coast of Luzon from the central plains, and is 42 km (26 mi) west of the dormant and more prominent Mount Arayat (another stratovolcano). Still, they're sometimes mistaken for each other.

Pinatubo erupted historically primarily andesitic (intermediate) rock. These days, it's largely dacite, a magma chemistry between andestie and rhyolite.
