∙ 12y agoAn upconverting or upscaling DVD player takes standard definition (480i in North America, 576i elsewhere) video and does two things to it:
- De-interlacing, which converts the interlaced scan to progressive scan.
- Scaling, which converts the video to 1080 lines.
So, basically, it gives you a 1080p video signal from a standard definition source.
It cannot (in spite of claims) make standard definition look as good as high definition, since it obviously can't create detail that was not present in the original video, but it can make standard definition video look as good as possible when it's displayed on a high-definition monitor.
