Addendum"Undocumented alien" is an alternative to "undocumented worker" (especially if they are unemployed!); also, unlawful immigrant, undocumented immigrant, unauthorized alien. "Out of status" is a term that an Immigration lawyer will use when speaking to his client.
It is interesting that a tourist is considered a "foreigner" or a "foreign citizen", but when his visa expires he becomes an "alien." "Foreign national" is a more neutral term that would cover both groups.
Referring to a person as an "alien" has the effect of dehumanizing them. Referring to a human being as being inherently "illegal" has the effect of demonizing them.
