Another Journey
A byroad is another name for a byway - a road less frequently travelled.
I always called them dirt bikes or motocross
Avenue, terrace, lane, thoroughfare, boulevard, roadway
the National road is also known as the cumberland road .
There are several versions of how the road got its name. One version claims there was a massacre of first nations people at a creek near the top of the road. Another claims there were two native men hanging from a tree at the top of the road. No matter how the road got its name, it is offensive and needs to be changed. There is a petition on change .org right now to change the name back to an earlier name "Indian Market Road".
"Swan road" is another name for the sea or the ocean in the epic poem Beowulf. It refers to the path or journey taken by swans as they fly over the water, likening it to the route taken by sailors on the sea.
A road can be "une route" (fem.) or "un chemin" (masc.) in French. They have the same meanings (road / itinerary) but maybe chemin conveys the idea of smaller country roads.
