I believe you misunderstood the question. He asked what the game is based on, not a summary of the events of the game. The game is based on true events. It can not be confirmed whether or not all the events in the game are true, but it is based on things that happened in Italy at that time, just like the first a. creed is based on the crusades.

It begins right after the ending of Assassin's Creed 2. The game is ultimately you, as Ezio, trying to find the location of the Apple of Eden... although the first few sequences of the game are mostly about Ezio arriving in Rome and stirring up a rebellion.
