The atomic number of an element stands for the number of protons in the unique atom of the element. The atomic number also is the same as the number of electrons. The atoms in each element differ from atoms in other elements by virtue of the number of positively charged protons in the atomic nucleus and the corresponding number of negatively charged electrons. The number of protons (or electrons) is the atomic number of the element.

The atomic number ranges from 1 for Hydrogen to 92 for Uranium and then beyond through the transuranic elements created in laboratory conditions.
