He belived in a progressive form of politics that he called New Freedom. His main idea in New Freedom was that if the government were able to break up big corporations and put restrictions on them and other companies to prevent monopolies then Laizze Fair would take it's course and take care of the people.
What is Laizze Faire?
An economic system free from government intervention. It's never really been tried. Things that interfere with it are corporate status, central banking, central planning, regulation after crony regulation, fractional reserve banking (counterfeiting), and the list goes on. One day when we learn that we don't need usury or governments, and that anarchy is more peaceful, we'll put it to the test. I imagine it will be an amazing success. The driving force behind the idea is not greed, but liberty.
What is Adam Smith's view of mercantile capitalism?
Smith's basic ideas are that capitalism is a "system of perfect liberty" and that if it is allowed to flourish it will inevitably lead to prosperity for all. Though it is not without it's flaws and to correct these flaws, minimal state intervention may be required. Perhaps the most famous example of this is "All for ourselves, none for others. The vile maxim of the masters of mankind." That is, that the capitalists horde wealth at the expense of others.
