Routine computer maintenance is mostly about keeping your hardware clean. Like opening up your system unit and blowing all the dust out. Also, using a mild soap and water to clean the monitor screen and keyboard. You can also have software maintenance and run ScanDisk about once a month to get rid of all the useless files in your system and then run DeFrag about every 2 months to clean up your hard drive and get rid of all the empty space. All these things will allow your computer to function smoothly and longer.

You should plan routine maintenance on your PC. This can fall into two categories software files and hardware. On the software side you should make a backup of all your documents, internet Favorties and anything you have been saving at least once a week. Second sofware is to make a complete copy of your hard disk at least once a month. If you do these two things then if you have a hardware crash that is not able to be fixed you will have your files. Second on the hardware, you should open up your computer case at least every three months and using compressed air blow out of all the dust that has been accumulating. Heat is a major factor of hardware breaking down, dust accumulates on the wiring and acts as a thermal blanket which holds in the heat.

Routine maintenance is maintenance done on a rather regular basis. For instance, changing oil in a car, changing furnace filters, running an antivirus program on a computer, and defragmenting a hard drive are all examples of routine maintenance. The goal of routine maintenance is to prevent serious problems by correcting minor conditions that happen regularly.

This I would call a basic maintance after setting whole IT system running so we could find errors in time and prevent disaster I would say every day has to be done. Steps for basic maintance in Windows enviroment would be: - 10 minute check to event viewer watch for errors , find backup log and read it, check antivirus log and start scan it will finish eventually - tommorow check that log result, if needed start solving errors.

Wow, I'm sorry but I must say that much of what Rtrahan mentioned in his answer is off the mark.

To correct, yes, there are various tasks one can do for routine maintenance to one's computer. One can open up the case and blow out the dust bunnies that can form inside (especially if the computers are kept sitting on the floor or if there are animals in the home). I generally advise my clients to do this a couple times a year, more often in homes with pets. One can also clean the screen periodically but this is not necessary very often provided that there are no hands that get on the screen regularly. When it does become necessary, don't use soap and water as Rtrahan suggested. Instead, use a glass cleaner and a paper towel. Make sure you have the monitor turned off and don't spray on so much that the fluid is dripping off and forming puddles around the base of the monitor. Spray on just enough to mist on the screen and then wipe it clean with the paper towel, just like one would do with a window.

As for the file system maintenance, be aware that the purpose of ScanDisk is not to find and clean off unneeded files. It is a diagnostic tool that checks the condition of the hard drive, specifically looking for errors such as cross-linked files, space that has been marked as used in the file allocation table but is actually available for use, and the tell-tale signs of bad sectors. To remove junk files such as old Windows Update files, you need to run either the Windows tool Disk Cleanup or something better such as the Ashampoo WinOptimizer utility. He is correct, though, that running a good disk defragmentation to keep your machine operating at peak performance is advisable. I disagree with the schedule, though. The average user can generally let that task go for several months, even up to a year, before running a defragmentation becomes necessary. If you tend to download lots of files or use a torrent client on a regular basis, then defragmenting as often as once a month may be better for you. If all you want to use is the Windows defragmentation utility, then that is better than nothing but I recommend just about anything above that. Once again, Ashampoo WinOptimizer has a good defragmentation program built into it, so I would advise using that. You can also find various others such as Auslogic's Disk Defrag at http://www.majorgeeks.com Just search for disk defrag.

I hope all this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to drop me a line.
