The basis of manners is getting along with those around us, by showing respect for others, as well as ourselves. Manners will vary from place to place, and from person to person. 'Etiquette' is simply defining what those manners are. Think of it this way; If you stay at a hotel, there will usually be a list of rules by the pool. This list is the 'etiquette' for the pool area. Following those rules is exhibiting good manners. Now apply this to every aspect of life.
Most of the time, there will be no clear-cut list, or printed etiquette, for a given situation. You can check beforehand if you are traveling to Another Country or new area, but the best mannered people are those who can size-up a situation and choose their behavior accordingly. This is when common sense and respect come into play with regard to the manners for each situation.
Look for clues and cues of acceptable behavior. If you see that everyone that arrives to a party is introducing themselves to those they do not know, do the same. If you notice that no one else has their feet on the furniture, leave yours on the floor. If you see the host and hostess putting coasters under drinks, make sure you use a coaster yourself. Most of all, treat everyone with the same amount of respect and courtesy you would like to be treated with, and never underestimate the power of a genuine smile.
The basis of Manners is to literally be disarming. Most Manners were developed to head off aggressive or reactionary behavior of uncivilized , aggressive people. To show lack of hostility and lack of intent to engage in a physical test of strength . Manners as a body of thought is a coating of civility that allows us to live with others.
