It is what happens before a saint is canonized. What happens is instead of just the local church knowing. They tell the world church that there is a new saint.

Beatification is one step below sainthood in the canonization process and it states to the entire world that this person lived a saintly life.

In the Catholic church, beatification is a recognition given to individuals who are believed to be in heaven because of their faith and virtue. It is a step in the process towards sainthood, and those who are beatified are called "Blessed." Beatification allows for public veneration of the individual in specific regions or groups.

If someone is beatified they are one step closer to being canonized as a saint. A beatified person is given the title of "blessed". For example Blessed Marie Rose Durocher.
