I think a DE (diametaceous earth) filter is great. I run a 28 foot x 4 foot pool filter 4 hours per day with a jacuzzi pump. It does the job real fine. I run a vacuum about once a week on my return line (a polaris vacuum). Between the two I have no water problems at all. The only time I had to do anything different, like run the filter for a longer period or vacuum more, is when we get a lot of rain and I get more stuff frrom trees into the pool.
I have Diamond Kleen™ is a 100% fused silicon dioxide filtration media Basically the same as a sand filter but the filter media is far superior. This is a new material and so far has lived up to the promises made about it I have never seen the pool this clean.
I have recently installed a new system in my pool and I have never seen the pool this clean. As well as this as a result of using a different type of salt in the salt water chlorine generator it actually feels better to swim in.In all honesty I have to admit that I do have some connections with this company and got the system on a pretty good deal. However I have nothing to gain by giving this endorsement. Have a look at poolrite they have a system called magnablu and a filtration media called diamond clean. http://www.magnapool.com/pdfs/MagnaBlu%20Manual.pdf
They are both sold by the same mob.
The sand filter This type of filter uses sand or other sand like media to run the water through.
The cartridge filter This uses a fine membrane through which the water is run.
The de filter this is a cartridge filter where the membrane is coated with dietamatious earth making it a very effective filter.
All personal choice. As far as which filter will filter out the finest particles, a DE or diatomaceous filter will screen out particles down to 2 microns. If you are looking for ease of maintenance and ability to tolerate neglect, then a sand filter reigns supreme.
The best filter for novice users is a cartridge filter. These are self explanatory. The pool water gets pumped though a removable filter cartridge. It can be removed and cleaned as often as you like. Soak it in some water and let the dirt disperse. If the filter gets too dirty, you can buy a new one.
A backwashable DE Filter. Diatomaceous Earth is the proper name.
The finest filter is the DE filter however they can be a bit of a pain so most people decide on a sand filter of one description or another.
I would always go with a sand filter, most of them are very similar in the way they work and so long as you stick with a reputable brand you should have no problems.

Yes.
The salt system has nothing to do with D E returning to the pool. You have a damaged filter element or a bad o-ring or seal in the back wash valve. You have to disassemble the filter and remove the filter grid assy to determine damage to grids. k
