That comes down to personal choice, but generally speaking it's best to avoid commercial brands like Tampax, Playtex, Kotex, Always, etc. as these are made from synthetics and chemically treated - thus more likely to cause irritation, bad odour, vaginal infection, and Toxic shock syndrome from tampons.

Cloth pads are the best option, all-in-one pads like Party In My Pants Pads are more comfortable but some people prefer insert style like Lunapads or Gladrags to add extra layers if needed. If you'd prefer disposable pads then organic brands like Cottons, Natracare, Emerita, or Maxim are best.

Tampons always pose risk so it's worth looking at safer options like menstrual cups or softcups. If using tampons you can use reusable sponge tampons like Sea Pearls which are more comfortable than disposable tampons, but if you want to use disposable tampons then use organic brands listed above.

It's best to avoid rayon tampons such as Tampax, Playtex, Kotex, etc. as these pose higher risk of TSS and contain chemicals, bleach and toxins like dioxin. Opt for cotton tampons such as Cottons, Natracare, Maxim, etc. or consider options such as sponge tampons like Jade & Pearl or soft tampons like Beppy which are more comfortable.

It's best to avoid commercial brands of pads such as Kotex and Always, like with commercial tampons these contain chemicals, bleach and toxins like dioxin so pose higher risk of infections, irritation and odour - being made from synthetics and plastics they can also irritate and make you sweaty down below. Opt for cotton tampons such as Cottons, Natracare, Maxim, etc. or cloth pads such as Lunapads, Gladrag or Party In My Pants.

There's really no definite best, as it varies with your priorities. A tampon is more discrete, but can promote infection unless changed frequently as it keeps the discharge inside the body.

What is the right age to start wearing a tampon?

When you start your periods then you can make the decision of whether you would like to use sanitary towels or tampons. I would recommend using sanitary towels when you have just started, and then when you feel you're ready, you go ahead and use a tampon :)
