"Better" is a relative term. Each does the function it's supposed to, and each has its advantages and disadvantages in comparison to the other. The AK-47 and AKM use the more powerful 7.62x39 cartridges. It also generates more recoil, and is heavier to carry. The 5.45x39 cartridge used by the AK-74 is less powerful, but is also lighter, and allows a larger basic load to be carried. When you consider that most ammunition expended in a firefight is used for suppression, and doesn't actually hit anything of significance, you can see where this is beneficial.

The ak74 is deffinetaly the better choice better rate of fire and better accuracy. However 1 bullet of the ak47 does more damage than 1 bullet of the ak74. So ak47 is mainly for hitpoints and ak 74 is better for fire rate and accuracy.
