It's generally 24" - but newer dishwasher drawers may have different dimensions and there are 18" dishwasher out there. Best bet is to check with the manufacturer of the dishwasher model you are installing and plan accordingly.

There is only one company that manufactures a dishwasher with drawers. Fisher and Paykel. These independent dishwashers can be ran separately. Both units combined is the same size as a standard dishwasher. It can fit in the cabinet where an old dishwasher took place. This dishwasher is not popular or in demand.

You might need to pull your dishwasher away from the cabinet to find the source of entrance for these pesky ants, because you might discover they are entering through the water drainpipe opening. Sprinkle ant poison or place ant traps in this area as well as along your baseboards to see if that helps.

Shut the electrical breaker off and lock it out. Undo the drain hose under your sink. Shut off the water supply under the sink to your dishwasher.Take the bottom front panel off the dishwasher. Undo the water supply attachment to your dishwasher. Open the door to your dishwasher and take out the screws attaching the dishwasher to the counter. Undo the electrical connection to the dishwasher. Slide the dishwasher out. You may have to adjust the legs to get the dishwasher out. If you have a new dishwasher to install, read the directions for installing it, do the reverse to take the old one out.
You can customize a cabinet to house your dishwasher. You can even add panels to the front of the washer to make it blend in with the other cabinets.
Unless there is another issue like drain location or cabinet design it is pretty much personal preference. The side closest to the dishwasher if you have one would probably be best for the dishwasher drain hook up
