Usually you would brown steak, beef and those sort of meats on the grill. But you can also brown vegetables, bread, pizza, and any other type of meat other than beef on the grill. Even fruit can be browned on the grill. The normal foods that would be caramelised under the grill would be fish, sweets (such as creme brûlée), omelette, bread toast, roasted cheese (cheese on bread). You would not normally 'brown' a steak or beef under a grill this would be done in a pan unless you were actually cooking (grilling) the meat like sausages and chops. You would not tend to use a traditional grill to brown pizza, vegtables or fruit as ythese would caramelise normally in an oven or pan.
Yes, you can melt a candy cane. The method of melting would depend on what you wanted to do with it, but generally, you can put it in a pan on low heat and continue to stir. It will burn easily if you are not careful due to the high sugar content.
You see all these warnings that the can may explode if you try to caramelize it unopened, but my mother routinely caramelized it in the can from approximately 1925 to 1985 without an explosion. She took the label off the can, put it in large pot well covered with cold water, and boiled it for three hours, removing the can and letting it cool to room temperature before opening. After she got a pressure cooker in about 1955, she use that and cooked the can for one hour. There are many ways Upma is prepared; indeed, every upma cook usually will impart a small difference in flavour when making the Upma. This variation is obtained by varying or emphasising some particular spice, thereby making for variation. A typical recipe is included here: == * Wheat Rava (Semolina) (1 cup) * Cooking oil (1 tbsp) * Mustard seeds (1 tsp) * Cumin (1 tsp) * Ginger root (1 tsp, grated) * Green chillies (3-5 med, chopped) * Chopped onions (1 med, chopped) (some people may omit this for cultural reasons) * Salt to taste * Vegetables of choice: Peas, carrots, eggplant, potatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes (3/4 cup, chopped) * Grated coconut (3-4 tbsp, optional) * Cilantro leaves (3-4 tsp, chopped, optional) * Lemon juice (2 tsp, optional) == * 1. Dry-roast rava until it just begins to turn brown, then keep aside. * 2. In a large saucepan/wok, heat the cooking oil. * 3. Add mustard seeds and wait for them to sputter. Then add cumin, ginger, green chillies and chopped onions and fry until onions caramelise. * 4. Add vegetables, salt and 1.5 cups of water, and bring to boil. * 5. Add the roasted rava, turn down the heat, and mix quickly to avoid lumps forming. * 6. The upma is done when all the water is absorbed by the rava. * 7. Hope this helped, if so, please "Recommend Contributor" Another way is to heat white sugar in a saucepan until it becomes a clear syurup then carefully spoon over your previously set & chilled custards idealy made the day before eating. this method gives a lovely clear brittle topping to the Creme Brulee which can be cracked with the back of a tea spoon just before eating and it should not be refridgerated as the caramel will soften so you can leave the last stage until up to an hour before serving. Any remaining hardened syrup can be removed fron the saucepan by filling it with hot water and bringing it up to the boil. approx 4oz (110g) sugar will suffice for four ramekins of custard.
Think what a chemical compound is: It is made of molecules. Generally the molecules stick together (or else your compound is likely to be a gas ). What is a molecule? It is made of a number of atoms that stick together in a certain way. We call the way that the atoms in molecules stick together the molecular bonds. There are different kinds of molecular bonds and some are stronger than others that can easily be broken, for example by shaking them very hard. The bonds that make molecules stick to each other so that they don't fall apart are generally weaker than the molecular bonds. We speak of them as intermolecular forces. Although the intermolecular forces generally are weaker than the molecular bonds, some kinds of large molecules, like proteins and cellulose have so many intermolecular forces that they can add up to being stronger than the molecular bonds. If you find this confusing, think of a ball of thread; you can wind thread off a reel very easily, far more easily than you can break the thread. However, if you tangle the thread and just tried to pull the tangle apart again then the thread will form knots and break; all the little places where the threads meet they add their forces together till they are stronger than the molecular bonds within the thread. If you first chop up your thread into a very short pieces, say a centimetre or two, then each piece has fewer places that can join up with other pieces of thread, and a mass of such little pieces of thread will not tangle. You can simply blow them apart and none of them will break. In fact it is very difficult to break such short pieces of thread at all because it is hard to get a good grip on them and shaking does them no harm. What happens when you heat something up? If you heat them enough in air, then their shaking bumps them into the oxygen molecules in the air, and they react and form new molecules; we say the become oxidised.
