Rubber plants are a type of Ficus, and Ficus are notorious for dropping their leaves. They may do this for several reasons. First, they hate to be moved. Most people turn their plants occasionally, but rubber plants HATE this. A lot. Best to just find a good spot for it, and leave it there. Second, they hate drafts. Even just one quick blast of cold air, and the leaves will drop. They don't even turn brown first usually, perfectly healthy leaves just fall off the plant. Third, overwatering can cause it to drop it's leaves, but it's usually a more gradual thing than what happens in the first two instances.

What is a defoliant?

A defoliant is a plant-removing or plant-killing agent. Plants can, in general, be called foliage. "De-planting" is removing plants, physically or by killing them. Correction - Foliage= Leaves. Defoliants cause the leaves to die and drop, which starves the plant. Agent orange was a defoliant as was arsenic for cotton plants.
