The Hindu clergymen are the members of the families in which male members brandish threads around trunk obliquely and even in public encircle their threads around their ear several yards before reaching for passing urine and passing feces.

There is no real clergy in Hinduism, but there are groups of Hindu teachers and priest who perform different roles:

  • Brahmans - offer spiritual help and guidance to the local community. They also explain the scriptures to the people, and help them through rituals and important ceremonies such as the festival of Holi and the birth rites.
  • Pandit or Pujari - A priest who performs religious duties and ceremonies in Hindu Temples.
  • Gurus - the teachers of the scriptures renowned for their wisdom and understanding who can offer advice and guidance. They are often older family members. Sometimes, people will take time off work to search for a personal guru and develop a special devotion to them. The person may submit to spiritual instruction from their guru for a certain time before returning to their everyday life.
  • Swamis - very learned men who have studied the scriptures and developed their spiritual practice to a very high level. Many have set up ashrams, retreat houses, that develop into colleges or universities where people can stay to study religious philosophy and meditation for a period of time.
  • Sannyasins - wandering holy men who have left their worldly responsibilities behind. They seek spiritual enlightenment, but may offer some words of wisdom to those who support them in their homeless lives.
