This is a difficult question to answer, as there is no given criteria to determine the most learned of all societies and people. But it can be broken down into several things. First is contribution. The Ancient Greek, Athens inparticular, contributed much of the foundations of all western thought. Drama was revolutionized after the Greeks, some of the best philosophers were all from Classical Greek, Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, and so on. Aristotilian and Socratic Methods still persist throughout universities today. But for sheer dramatic adaptation one must look at Elizabeathen England and Shakespeare's contributions as well as Johnson, Marlowe, and others. There is also the Enlightenment Period were many of the foundations for future thought were laid out by the likes of Newton, Bacon, and Smith. There was also Thomas Hobbes and john Locke's political revoutlion in England, and the expansion thereof in Revolutionary America. There were the Ancient Babylonians who under Hamurabi created the first complete set of laws. There was the Discovery Age Europe where men like Colombus and Magellean sailed the oceans. There was also the Invention Age with men like Einstien, Edison, Tesla, Ford, and Bell. There was also the Islamic World in the Middle Ages that made revolutionary discoveries in the fields of Medicine and Math. However, the average person in todays society with our education system knows more than any of these individuals before hand, so in actuality contemporary society is the most learned. If that is an insufficient answer, the the Greeks are responsible for much of the foundation that was later used.
The ancient Greeks are often considered one of the most learned societies in history due to their contributions in philosophy, mathematics, science, and the arts. Their advancements and intellectual achievements laid the foundation for Western civilization.
