"Cysto" means related to the urinary tract; "-scopy" means to look in/at for diagnosis or treatment. A cystoscopy is a test procedure in which a flexible tube with a camera on the end is inserted up the urethra (tube that carries urine to the outside) into the bladder.
About one hour prior to the test, a nurse administers a light sedative or muscle relaxer. An IV is started, if one is not already running. Then the patient is wheeled into the X-Ray department. There, the patient is given fast acting sedation (count backwards from 100 and you're asleep before you get to 98). The tube/camera is inserted through the first sphincter; the urologist checks its patency (how well the sphincter opens and closes). The urethra walls are inspected, then it passes through the bladder sphincter. Exam is done of the bladder walls. If required, tools can be inserted through the tube to biopsy the bladder tissue. X-Rays can be taken as well.
The procedure lasts between 30-60 minutes. A catheter is in place when the patient awakens. It is removed within 24 hours.
*Note: The first urination can be quite painful because of bladder spasms.
A cystourethrography is a procedure to take an X-ray picture of the urinary bladder and urethra. It is made using contrast media to allow specific structures to stand out in the X-ray. This picture is called a cystourethrogram.
Cysto- means a bladder. Urethro- pertains to the urethra (the tube from the urinary bladder to the outside of your body).
A urethrocystogram is radiography of the urethra and bladder.
A cystogram is an x-ray of the bladder with contrast.
