What is least darker than the umbra?

The umbra is the darker area of complete shadow, while the penumbra is a lighter area that is only partly shadowed. You can demonstrate this at home. Set up two lamps a couple of feet apart. Hold up a beach ball or sheet of cardboard smaller than the separation, several feet away from the lamps. Each lamp casts light in all directions, and the obstruction casts a shadow - a separate shadow from each lamp. Where both lamps' shadows overlap, this is the umbra. Where one lamp is lighting up the shadowed area from the other lamp, this is the "penumbra".

What is it called when it is a complete shadow?

The darkest part of a shadow is called the "umbra" The lighter part of a shadow is called the "penumbra" An "antumbra" is the area of light which surrounds the object creating a shadow, as in a "ring of fire" eclipse (like the recent one in May, 2012). It can best be seen when the viewer is beyond the focal point of the umbra, but in line with it.

What would you see in a eclipse?

In a Lunar Eclipse, you see the full moon suddenly with a small "bite" out of it, as the Moon enters the Earth's shadow. The darkened area will grow and grow. In a partial eclipse, the shadow then starts to slide off of the Moon (actually, the Moon is passing beside the shadow, without being completely darkened). In a total eclipse, the Moon gets darker and darker until it is entirely within the Earth's shadow. Then something marvelous happens. Once the Moon is completely in the shadow of the Earth, you would think that the Moon would be completely dark, but it isn't; the Moon becomes a deep red! The direct light of the Sun can no longer hit the Moon, because the Moon is in Earth's shadow; but the red light refracted AROUND the Earth continues out into space and lights the Moon a dim red color. The red light is the red of the sunsets and sunrises all around the world!

What is the part of a shadow that surrounds the darkest part?

There are two parts of a shadow: the UMBRA and the PENUMBRA. UMBRA is the inner darker part of a shadow. PENUBMRA is the outher lighter layer of a shadow. During a solar eclipse, the area on the planet that witnesses a complete total solar eclipse would be under the moon's shadow's UMBRA. The area that views a partial solar eclipse would be under the PENUMBRAL shadow.

How is a shadow formed explain?

A shadow is made when an object blocks out light coming from a light source. because there is less light particles in that area, surfaces don't reflect as much, making it darker in that area. that is why you can't see when there is no light source.

True or false the umbra is the inner part of the shadow?

The umbra in a shadow is the portion where light from a source is completely blocked. This is in the middle of the shadow. The area around this, where light from part, but not all of the source shines is called the penumbra. In the shadow cast by the moon in an eclipse, the penumbra is the partial shadow that occurs before the total eclipse, and the umbra is the 'total eclipse' portion
