There are a lot of reasons of defective listening which are as follows:

Semantics: Words can have quite different meaning when used in different situations. These semantic problems spoil effective listening.

Biases: Different people have different view points. When we listen to any person who has view point, we get less attentive. We almost ignore what he is telling us. And sometimes we miss valuable information for this reason.

Pre-thinking: Thinking speed proceeds thinking and speaking speeds. When we listen to somebody out thinking mechanism starts guessing what to come next. Sometimes we come to wrong earlier conclusion and stop paying attention to all what is coming next.

Physical Distraction: The physical distractions around listener distract his\her attention. These distractions can range from harsh noise, dull surroundings and rough weather to speakers personal weaknesses.
