it depends on the load demand on the engine. over the road tractor trailers with pre-electronic engine controls which arrived roughly in 1981 from Detroit Diesel, only got between 2.5 to 4 mpg. with electronic engine controls today most get from 5.0 to 7.0 mpg, but there are many variables which will reduce this, specifically loaded gross vehicle weight up to 80,000 lbs, wind direction and velocity, vehicle speed, start stop frequency, terrain elevation changes, and vehicle aerodynamics which are greatly affected by height, combination length, or whether the trailer is a van, reefer, tanker, dump, rib-sided container, or livestock or grain trailer.

How do you calculate lubricating oil consumption for a diesel engine?

The consumption of lubricating oil for a diesel engine depends on the operating conditions and the design of the engine. There are some averages depending on the year of the engine. Pre 1980's engine are around 25% of fuel consumption. Pre 1990 engines are around 20% of fuel consumption and more recently built diesel engines are around 1% of fuel consumption.

Why do you use diesel oil in cars as fuels?

Look at the fuel consumption for a VW Jetta TDI and the answer is obvious, even with recent increases in the price of diesel fuel. Ford sells a diesel Focus in Europe, but not North America - yet. There are other characteristics of diesel engines that make them more suitable than gas engines for trucks and large equipment.

What is the major difference between a petrol car and a diesel one?

The primary difference between a petrol car and diesel car is the consumption rate - diesel and petrol are refined from mineral oil using differing methods. The result is diesel engines having a lower fuel consumption rate than their petrol counterparts when installed in a vehicle of similar mass. CO2 emissions are also lower in a diesel engine than they are in a petrol engine.
