Historically, in various times and places a king or government asserted that the king ruled by the will of God or some gods. The implication was also made that this meant the king's legitimacy was divine, and so the king was not subject to earthly law.

This idea was used, or at least implied, in the Roman Empire. It was not used much, if at all, during the Middle Ages, but came to be important during the Renaissance, largely as a result of the political theories published by Jean Bodin, who lived in France from 1530 to 1596. The idea was picked up by monarchs of his time in England and France, and was particularly important under King James I of England (James VI of Scotland) and Louis XIV of France. The English King Charles I was very attached to the idea, to the point of alienating his subjects, and it was one of the factors that lead to his downfall.

The idea of the divine right of kings was abandoned by the English, beginning when Charles II regained the throne. It was destroyed in France by the French Revolution.
