As far as I know, it's another description of the work a housekeeper/maid would do, such as laundry, dishes, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning, making beds.
Way back when, a domestic worker would get up very early, and start fires in the fireplace, set out clothes for the "master" and "mistress", empty "chamber pots", shine real silver , copper and brass items, prepar and lug hot water for bathes, and any other household tasks they were ordered to do, including fetching things, putting up decorations around the holidays, scrubbing floors, shining shoes, etc.
A separate "nanny" might have minded the kids and kids stuff.
A separate cook would have done the cooking.
